The foundation of all UNI-SOLAR products is their unique Triple Junction amorphous silicon solar cell. Amorphous construction allows lower costs, and a flexible substrata with DuPont Tefzel glazing creates a flexible, unbreakable product. Each cell is composed of three semiconductor junctions stacked on top of each other. Each layer is tuned for increased sensitivity to specific light frequencies. The bottom cell absorbs red light, the middle cell absorbs green light and the top cell absorbs blue light. UNI-SOLARŽ framed panels are for permanent, fixed position mounting with optimum tilt, wind resistance, and exposure to sunlight. The large framed panels are often used as building blocks in photovoltaic arrays, which can be assembled to meet virtually any load.

UNI-SOLAR offers to different solutions for building integrated photovoltaics. The PVL-series and the SHR-series Solar Shingles.

The PVL-series is a field-applied flexible laminate for standing-seam steel roofs. It's commonly referred to as "peel 'n stick" solar, since that's exactly how it's installed. It fits 16" wide roof pans, and comes in various lengths and wattages. Installation must be supervised by a certified installer, usually your dealer, and new installation, before the metal roof pans go up on the roof, is greatly preferred. Roofing pans must use GalvalumeŽ brand finish. Electrical connections are usually at the top, and are hidden and protected under the flashing. DC Power Systems can arrange for installation and/or for certified installer training.

The SHR-series is a shingle product designed to interweave with conventional composition asphalt shingles. Available in a single size at 17 watts, each shingle is 86.4" (7.2 feet) long, with a normal 5" of tab exposure at the bottom, just like asphalt shingles. They're nailed or stapled in place, just like regular shingles, and will interweave with standard asphalt composition shingles perfectly. Wiring is dropped into the attic space at the upper corner of the shingle (where it's protected by three layers of shingles above it). All wiring is done in the dry, protected attic space. These shingles have been honored with the Popular Science Grand Award, "Best of What's New," and with Discover magazine's "Technological Innovation Award."
